Vulnerability

Hello everyone.

Thanks for your support in getting this started! I got 50 page views in the first 24 hours after my first post!

I have been thinking a bit about truth. It is one of the most valuable weapons we have against the enemy, and all of the things that try to pull us down.

The enemy likes to do his business in secret: isolating us and making us think that no-one in the world can relate to our experiences. He loves to call to mind all the times in our past where we have been hurt, or where we have hurt others, or made bad choices.

The best way to prevent him being able to do that is not to have any secrets. To share those things with our community and with our God, and to be ready to accept rebuke, correction, sympathy and most of all, love from them. 1 John 1:7 says "But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin."

The Church seems to recognise this, but I have noticed a trend in the Church to talk about being "vulnerable" in the sense of sharing those things about our past that we are ashamed of, or unhappy with, or emotionally connected to.

I'm not sure this gives the right message.

The problem is that the idea of vulnerability carries with it a certain level of fear. The word comes from a Latin word meaning "to wound or injure". It implies that the "vulnerable" action - revealing that truth - in some way exposes us to the enemy's destruction.

Truth does expose us, but not to the enemy. When we walk in the truth, the whole truth, and not in some managed version of it, we expose ourselves to Christ. By walking in a lie, obscuring the truth, we attempt to hide a part of ourselves from Him. We think this will stop Him from seeing our shame, but all it does is restrict our access to Him, and distract us from the schemes of the enemy - the prince of lies and shadows - who prowls around us like a lion, waiting for his chance to devour us.

Our God watches over us and protects us. He will not let go of what he has been given. He wants us to be fully revealed before him so that we can have full access to his very being. It will very likely hurt for a little while- like sunburn- as we get used to the change, but we will be strengthened and bronzed as we continue to bask in his glory.

It's a question of terminology. Don't stop sharing the truth, but recognise that you are not vulnerable. You are children of the King, who works all things together for the good of those who love Him. You carry His authority and His majesty, and you are victorious over the enemy.

Let's stop being vulnerable. Let's walk in truth.
